Belém

Belém sits on the Tagus riverbank west of downtown Lisbon, often mistaken for the waterfront Ribeira district but distinctly its own—grander, more monumental, less crowded. The neighborhood centers on the Jerónimos Monastery and Pastéis de Nata shops, but extends into residential streets of early-20th-century apartment buildings and quieter squares. It draws tourists by day and a mix of locals, students, and expats by night. Rua Vieira Portuense and the riverside promenade are where you actually live; the monument zone is where you walk through. The Museu de Marinha and Museu da Eletricidade anchor cultural life, but the real character lives in the cafés tucked between residential blocks.
