Estrela sits on a gentle hill in western Lisbon, often mistaken for the adjacent Lapa neighborhood but distinctly quieter and more residential. The district centers on the Basílica da Estrela, an 18th-century white marble dome that anchors the skyline and gives the area its name. Tree-lined streets slope downward toward the Tagus, lined with mid-rise apartment buildings from the mid-20th century alongside older townhouses. The Jardim da Estrela, a public garden with a lake and mature trees, draws locals rather than tourists. Residents tend toward older Lisboetas, young families, and expats seeking calm; the pace is noticeably slower than Príncipe Real or Santos just across the hill.
