I will be moving to Haiti in about 6 months from now. I will be living in Petionville.
I want to live in Haiti the rest of my life, and become a citizen after the required 5 years in the country.
I am an American citizen, and while I love Haiti and will be so proud to call it my country. That being said however, I am concerned about my safety being white. While I have known this for a long time and it is not enough to make me change my plans, I have never been able to find an answer to this issue.
It causes me great discomfort to stand out because of my skin colour. I know the Port-au-Prince area has a pretty large number of white people, both Haitian and foreigners. Roughly how many are in Petionville, where I am going to be living in?
Also, are most black Haitians racist towards whites? I know about the 1804 massacre, and reading about it makes me even more worried for my safety. Furthermore, would black Haitians accept me as a true, proud Haitian as a naturalised white citizen?
I cannot express in words how grateful I will be if I can find an answer to these questions. I am very excited about moving to Haiti, and have met all the requirements except this anxiety.
