Moving down for a six month exploratory trip. Is it worth it to bring a gps? Do they work in Belize(as long as you have the system programmed in your gps)?

Thanks! Though I do drive in rural Louisiana and sometimes the GPS says turn here and its a road thru a field.

From what I understand only any good for nautical uses. GPS isn't any good in the Caribbean. There aren't any roads to worry about LOL

Belize is 200 miles by 80 miles. There is basically 4 highways and road/street addresses just about don't exist. Using a gps seems senseless. Look at a paper map for 2 minutes and you have it pretty well figured out. A few days in county with a car and you have been everywhere.

I'm going to disagree with the majority here. The lack of signage is exactly why having an electronic map is helpful. Maybe just something like Google Maps, not a GPS unit as such, but you want to be able to locate where you actually are.
Even on the highways, some of the roundabouts have signs on only one of the three approaches. I have played with Google Maps giving step-by-step directions and it does work just fine.
Note: I'll confess to being directionally challenged and quite easily lost! Also, I have never used a dedicated GPS unit as such, only watched them in use.

I must admit I was thinking of car based GPS, which will not work in Belize. But im sure many of the Apple and Android devices will most certainly give you a pretty accurate position, so atleast you know where you are.

there must be some car based GPS that works somewhat in Belize as Crystal motors offer GPS as an add on to their rentals now.

I agree with Elgordo42 - Google maps works great on my Android tablet. Even in downtown Belize City which is directional chaos.

It works to tell you where you are, but not where you should go. For example. to go from Belize City to Placencia it tells you to take the Coastal Highway. All the rental car companies forbid you driving this road. The boulders and potholes are big enough to lose a car in. Just because it's called a 'highway' doesnt mean it is anything more than a cart path.

Using GPS in Belize depends what your intention is and what device you are using
It also depends which map you have loaded onto your device
In Belize the best map I have found is CenRut

Scratch my last, Cenrut is best for handheld devices, such as devices that allow you to add tracks and waypoints
The best option would be to use you smart phone or tablet maps, you can Roam belize networks but best option would be to buy a phone chip from belize with Data included

I downloaded Google maps into my hand-help GPS, and find it very helpful. As for the more micro-level of when and where to turn, good luck with that, Belize is not there yet.
