Internet in Belize

Allan I never responded to your opinion on the internet because I was not sure. But now I know.
You are 100% wrong about internet in Belize.
I am in Corozal, and the monthly bill for unlimited internet is $80belize.
I work online so depend on good service. The internet here is fast enough that I can work and have a window open with a streaming movie. Since I have tenants (a four plex)they are also using the internet at the same time . I have encountered no issues. It is the same speed I am accustomed to in Canada.
In Canada I have used both Rogers and Bell for service. If you stream movies in Canada it is ridiculously expensive. I have had many bills over $300 Canadian dollars.
So Belize has good internet period.

I trust Rebecca before I trust commercial expats..

In Merida it costs me 35$ us/ month for 10mps
Canada thru Vianet is 65$ fibre op
Cheap, efficient and Belize ought not to be used in the same sentence Todd

Agreed. But, my point stands that there is no longer any reason to complain about internet service in Belize. So you can mark that off you list of things to constantly put down.
As a side; we decided to go down to Caye Caulker for a week. I don't know what the hotels pay for internet. I do know that the wifi was also top notch for streaming and no waiting for buffering.
Also, I am not an expat but a snowbird. I own a house in Belize but have no commercial interest. It is just the same as our cottage in Canada. I like the lake we are on but I am no trying to make any sale when I say it is nice.

Ok then I withdraw my previous remarks implying lack of objectivity on your part due to capitalist interests. At least we agree that if one absolutely insists on Belize as a relocation destination, then Corozal is a smart choice. But I have done extensive price comparisons with Mex, Belize, and Canada. You are incorrect in stating that Belize is cheaper than the latter. It isnt in the area of commodities, from kitchen taps to electronics to Cottonelle t.p. to health care; Canada is cheaper.

It is all relative; and I don't think anyone has done the economic study do the detail necessary to take all factors into account.
For example yes my roads are good in Ontario. My property tax is over $8,000 a year to pay for it. In Belize it is $35 (for a North American standard, big
house).... but the roads are crap and I pay for it in time and car repairs.
For day to day living though the difference to me is negligible. I am not worried if I pay $1.50 for bread or $3.00. To me it is worth it to escape winter to somewhere I enjoy where really day to day costs are not different enough that I even notice.

All our Canadian friends that had homes on AC were snow birds, most had major businesses in Canada and incomes over $500k/annum and didnt care a hoot about what stuff cost , they just wanted to have sunshine and to party. Very different from expats on $2k/month where every cent counts.

Ok thats understandable. Property taxes are very low in Bz. People ( libertarians I assume) go on about how great this is. But thats what pays for fire, police, road repair, libraries, green spaces, and countless community improvements. For a winter escape keep in mind that the state of Q.Roo in Mexico has 10,000 Canadian snowbirds who own property there. Belize has at best 800 extrapolating the last census. There are solid reasons for this difference..

Tha Mexico has more retiree's than us plus tourism is because their marketing is years ahead.Understandably also Mexico is cheaper than Belize but for those that want fruits that taste naturally and cheap cable then we are cyeaper.

That may be true in Corozal; however it is not true in s Belize. The internet is sometimes spotty and slow in San Ignacio, San Antonio and Hopkins.

This message is for all you people who constantly compare a developing country, Belize to a first world country like Canada, USA, and surrounding economies like Mexico. Belize does not manufacture thus the high tax on an item; anything and everything has to be imported. The population here is tiny in comparison and Belize does not command the investment loans from multinational corporations. So do your maths, and reading, get away from your tunnel vision and speak about something more constructive. You must be here for some reason!

This reply goes for those naysayers who don't like our toilet tissue and our fry jacks and our Chinese corner stores and our lack of 1st world conveniences.

I am also Canadian living currently in Florida. We want to explore Belize as we have heard nothing but good things about it. Can you give me some info on living there?

Or go straight to the (updated) source:
https://smart-bz.com/services/#broadband

Middle of page, see “Double Speed Half the Price”. it shows specific areas such as Belize district.

WiFi at a mid-price hotel I stayed in Caye Caulker last week was 15mbps down.
