Was wondering if people mail packages to you and if they get charged duty etc. Say something like alarm clock or clothes.

packages mailed through the usps will arrive in Belize fairly quickly (depending on priority rate chosen by sender). A customs form will have to be filled out and when the package arrives in Belize either the Post office will call you. if that information is on the packaging it has arrived, or when you go to pick up your mail, you will have a customs bill to pay. It is a waste of time and good will in the community if you think the sender lying on the customs form as to description or value of item posted as the postmaster has the authority to open and examine all packages, and levy duties on the value he asses is correct for the item, post masters may check on the internet for the value of your items, which also adds in the cost of the postage to that value and levy's the percentage according to his book.

USPS works well. The package is received at the local post office, you go in to collect it, and pay duty at the time you pick it up. Duty is assessed by the local postmaster. They will often open the package to verify contents, so tell the sender to be honest about what's being sent.

iterator- Are the duties outrageous or in line with other countries?

Rate of duty depends on what's being sent. Could be anywhere from 0% to 85%. Check the Belize Customs site for an idea of rates.

Try to avoid using USPS and sending here in Belize. It is slow, costly and you have to wait in line at the PO and check back for it. Unless it is something, you must have NOW, just keep a list and when you return to the US or Canada, take your empty suitcases , then buy what you need and bring back with you. If you have a lot of things, SHIPPING via a Shipping Company is faster, more reliable and cheaper using a customs broker.
