Mechanic Work

I am strongly considering a 5 year plan that ends with me and my gf living on a sailing catamaran in Belize. Anchored close to land so I can work there.
My work is fixing stuff. Pretty much anything with wheels, I can figure it out. The bulk of my expertise is on cars and light duty trucks, and bicycles.
I am having a real hard time finding out what technology you guys have down there. Up here, we have had a mandatory on board diagnostics standard for many many years.It's called OBD2, ALL cars sold hereafter1995 have had to have it by government mandate, It has a standard connector under the dashboard, and a standardized way of communicating with a "scan tool" that a mechanic would plug in and use to help troubleshoot the vehicle. Up here, if you have a car built after 1995 and it has a "Check Engine" light on, and you don't have a scanner, don't even bother trying to figure it out most of the time. Does any of this sound familiar to you in Belize?
Where can I go to learn more about what skills make for a really great mechanic there?
