My wife and I are going to spend a week in Corozal in October. Would appreciate any info on where to socialize, meet with Expats. Thanks to all. Like the forum.

A really nice guy, Bruce lives up there and he reached out to us before we got there and it was very, very helpful. WHERE are you going to stay in Corozal? DO NOT stay at the Las Vegas hotel unless you want to wait in immigration lines(both directions) and pay addntl fees. There are quaint to NICE places to stay in or very near town. We were guided to the Copper Horse I think by Maria at RD's restaurant but we found a different place before we got there.

I can't help re: the epats hangout because I did not look for it but I would suggest that if you have a car...drive out the 6.1km road to Consejo shores. That was an extremely helpful exercise for me in "the process".

The Jam Rock Restaurant, is a popular hangout for expats. It sits on the bay, with an outstanding water view. Looking out from the restaurant you can see the profile of the downtown shoreline, across the water. Expats drop in at this casual restaurant frequently for lunch or dinner, to enjoy a Belikin beer, or their favorite cocktail.

Well...If Art in the Park is on the Sat. you are there you will find some there. There is a little open air bar on the Bay.. Rocky's, they gather there WEd. afternoons to play darts. There are other watering holes down on the bay where expats congregate as well. Make sure you go to Tony's Inn on the Bay for drinks and a meal. If you eat lunch at Mama June's you may run into some there.....

Don't forget my friends at the Millennium bar in Consejo Village. Tell Jorge we sent you. If Smugglers Den is open in Wagners Landing it is great too. I have not spent much time at "The Little Palapa" in Consejo Village but very close to Millennium. It is/was run by Darvin's (Local fishing guide) mom. Very small area and great vibes.

Thanks to all for great input! I am curious to know if we can go to Chetumal, as tourists in Belize. I have read there is also a $40 fee going in and also you pay to get out. Is that correct?

$37.50 but its important to see if you are planning to retire in Corozal. Chetumal has excellent Medical Care, tons of restaurants and shopping.. The Airport I have been using to travel to the US.

3 friends & myself will be visiting Corozal Oct. 15th thru 20th. I'm there to decide if that's where I'd like to be during winter months in New York. I will definitely check out the places that are recommended in response to your email.

Corozal is fast becoming the location of choice for expats who don't want your typical tourist packed locations, for it's proximity to Chetumal, for its value for money.
Agree with some of the other posts, you have to check out Consejo area and some of its beautiful expat developments, including, "Mayan Seaside", "Wagner Landings", and of course the most established development in all of Belize, "Consejo Shores", all f which are waterside developments

Forgot to mention, the beautiful, family run restaurant overlooking Chetumal Bay
"Smugglers Den"
Best "filet mignon" in all of Corozal
It has its own beach and the expat crowd on Friday evening are a wealth of information
You can also rent Cabanas overlooking the beach

Across the bay from Corozal Town there is Cerros which is home to three developments and just across the bay from Cerros is Orchid Bay and a couple other smaller developments. Quite a few families have come in and more on the way. 10 homes now at Cerros Sands either occupied or under construction. Four restaurants as well out this way.

When you go to the border to cross over into Mexico you have to pay the fee. You do not have to pay it when you re-enter Belize.

Make sure you really want to go to the Cerros area. The road is somewhere between horrible and rotten in a lot of places. Three times in the last 10 years I have tried it and two of those times the person I was wanting to show the area too said....."If I have to drive this road ever I would not live at the end of it" We turned around and wonder why it even exists. I know some folks that talked about moving out there but would use a boat and cross the bay. I can't imagine that road at night. I suggest military vehicles may stand up to it but not anything I own. IMHO

Kenubelizeit

It is often said that difficult roads lead to beautiful places. I was at Cerros a week ago and it wasn't that bad In a jeep patriot. There are more much worse roads but again it is dependent on how tough your spirit is. I love that area of the country and the best thing so far no sargassum plus the water is aquamarine. It is also cheaper than consejo shores or orchid bay. I do agree having a small skiff would surely be better.

mcagun
  8/25/2018 10:09 EST

The statement that Cerros Sands is cheaper than Consejo Shores is just not true
A back lot on Cerros is $17K
A back lot on Consejo Shores is $15K

Also logistics costs to Cerros are going to be a lot more than that of Consejo, thus your construction costs are going to be higher

Kenubelizeit
  8/25/2018 10:23 EST

I am not going to argue about prices nor will I argue about where logistics are concerned that's the developers or those doing a sales pitch best that is left for the potential retiree. So I will excuse myself have a good day everyone.

Wow. What a crock. This road is traveled personally by me all the time. So I guess all the folks from Chunox and Copperbank don't use these roads. Kids go back and forth to High School and college daily on these roads. Everyone shops in Corozal Town traversing on these roads.

Guess some are just used to the highways in the US and Canada?

This is Belize, I have folks coming in from Corozal Town and Orange Walk every weekend to use the Beach and enjoy Blackbeard's Restaurant at Cerros Sands.

Even the Highways are not great in Belize. We love the country and do not need to do 60 miles an hour to get anywhere.

Take a breath and enjoy the scenery.

The birds and wildlife along our country roads will amaze you.

belizelenny

If you want to be roadside with no view of the sea, then yes the Consejo back lots are cheaper.

The $17,770 parcels at Cerros Sands have water views and a great breeze. Some are even on the Golf Driving Range.

For 29K at Cerros Sands you can have a 1/4 acre on a deep-water channel for you dock and boat.. Find that anywhere else.

Construction prices are not higher than anywhere else. Workers come and live in the Villages nearby. We do have small stores here as well.

Oh, and tell me where you can find a seafront parcel with 80 + sea frontage for 79K other than Cerros Sands..

Well someone is not being truthful , who is is it, i know roads change a lot between the wet and dry seasons, but reports on here are poles apart, some by people with massive financial monies at stake , others just expats trying to get the truth.

Kenubelizeit
  8/25/2018 23:37 EST

Well if the road changed from last week until now it is very fast in fact we were getting late and the speed the driver was going I was very tempted to tell him to slow down. However I have been on that same road when it has been bad but I do know for a fact that the developer Mark Leonard and other people do their best to keep the road in good condition so maybe I know too much. BTW this is not an endorsement for cerros sands but do visit Blackbeard's very good food well worth the wait.

Conditions of all non paved roads in Belize change during heavy rain fall
Both Consejo rd and the ferry rd have become impassable at times, mosttimes they are great sometimes they are bad

Here's a good article on how bad both roads can get

Basically you can bring in anything that the country does not produce. For example all fruits and nuts require a permit from BAHA and is therefore prohibited unless you get an importers license. No poultry products allowed nor fresh meats or packaged cuts allowed. All sin or luxury items carry a high import revenue replacement duty. ie alcohol and cigars. Clothing toilet tissue groceries shoes pots and other necessities is what is normally bought; just brought a SUV load of stuff from Chetumal last week and between All 3 we paid $35 USD total. Not bad and the vehicle was fully loaded. If you need more information feel free to email me at [email protected]
