We are starting a thread for expats in Belize to share information and concerns about Coronavirus. If you would like to post an update and let others know what is happening in your area, we encourage you to do so. What type of precautions are being taken at airports? medical facilities? schools? If you are being told by authorities to make any preparations, what are they telling you.

From the US, you are completely right. It is a manufactured scare to do two things. Affect the market and the upcoming elections. It is also a major reason we want out.

The political rhetoric on all sides might be used to scare folks but the Virus is very real, A form of flu ( which are the Corona viruses) which is new to the medivcal world, ERGO the name NOVEL coronavirus ( among others being used for it).
As with other forms of flu that happen every year (US has had over 10,000 deaths already, this flu season down to the usual flu viruses )
It ranges from mild to lethal within the population, this new version has a propensity to cause severe lung problems and in the older and less healthy victims this can cause severe illness or death.
Symptoms are similar to regular flu but often associated with difficulties with breathing. Should you get a very high fever and flu like symptoms go see a docto, if you do have any flu like symptoms this is the time you want to be wearing the masks. they will help to stop you spreading the virus, they are far more effective for that than just wearing one when you are perfectly well.
One interesting fact from the experiences in China has been children over about 3 or 4 ( who did not have other medical problems) have had extremely mild illnesses even within families that all have been affected. It is thought due to this fact many cases in the world have not been diagnosed as this particular virus and it could have been circulating much longer than the start of the year. At the moment there are no known cases in Belize, if you are flying, anywhere not just to Belize, and have a fever or feel unwell see a doctor before getting on the plane.

agreed it is real (and don't want to get into a big long argument about it because that's what is going on here in the states) but it is no more scary than regular old flu. in fact, the mortality rate for covid19 is lower than common flu.
using common sense and normal hygiene one would take to combat catching a cold or other virus is sufficient. hyperbolic media coverage along with weaponized political attacks are making it seem more scary, but facts is facts.

Wrong! COVID-19 mortality rate is at 2%, while common flu is at 0.1%.
That's 20 TIMES more deadly!
And for you to mention "election year" shows me your ignorance, and the news channels you follow (watched much Fox news, recently?)

Having been in the medical field, and having a daughter that is a laboratory scientist, with a little more in depth information, I find it a bit comical when people get so bent out of shape about things like this. If you want to spend your time fretting and buying into the hysteria the news puts out, that we are all going to die from Covid19, be my guest. I refuse to live my life in fear. Coronavirus is at this time leas deadly then the flu. Yes people have died and that is a shame. But for the average healthy person, it is not going to kill you. Spend a little time each day watching the briefings from the CDC and staff. Those that have died have either been immune compromised or older. We are all older, but we don't have to die from it. Stay hydrated, get ample sleep and eat better. While at it, enjoy your life. After all you could die tomorrow from anything! But if you prefer hysteria go for it. And as of 1 hour ago the death toll in the US is 6!!!! Not 17! Don't know where YOU get your news from ditalian. Maybe you should worry about your own country- Italy actually has 57 deaths as yesterday.

In light of that, can "boots on the ground" in Belize (I'm presently in Austin) tell me if/what they are seen or hearing in country about it?

No cases reported so far.

US Embassy report says:

"Country-Specific Information:

Belize has no confirmed cases of COVID-19 within its borders.
Use of the influenza preparedness plan is advised.

Entry and Exit Requirements:

Entry is being denied to all foreign nationals (except Belizeans) who have traveled to mainland China within 14 days prior to arrival in Belize.
Travelers do not need particular documentation to enter/exit.
Screening is being conducted for those coming from mainland China, but with denial due to the travel ban, screening measures have not been revamped. For Belizeans, the Ministry of Health has implemented monitoring and self-quarantine for 14 days.

Quarantine Information:

Belize has plans to establish an isolation unit for Belizeans who test positive for COVID-19.

Local Resources:

The Ministry of Health has been providing information primarily through all social media outlets.

Just wondering what a few people on this forum are now thinking since they have been proved so wrong , cases in USA over 1300, all sport cancelled , Disney world closing , Italy on Lock down, USA testing useless, and way behind other countries. Its a pity the President is so unconcerned .

Not proved wrong, but think what you will. The numbers do not lie. Coronavirus is no more dangerous nor widespread than common flu. Educate yourself and stop using world-wide maps which include China and Italy whose healthcare, resources, population density, living conditions and other factors do not even remotely mirror that around where you are. Don't feed the the panic. Visit https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-in-us.html to educate yourself. You seem to be a grounded, intelligent individual regarding other issues. Take the same approach with this one.

So flu closes whole countries stops sport world wide and causes the biggest market drop since 1987 , I dont think its me that as a retired world wide businessman , that needs educating , even the top US specialist Docs are saying the US has been far to casual and taken wrong advice and inadequate measures. Im non political by the way , but recognise a poor leader when i see one

allow me to explain my position a bit more clearly.
i am in no way saying covid19 isnt a threat nor am i saying people should not be careful and wary.
i AM saying that i think the majority of people are very much overreacting and it is media driven not fact driven.
further, here in the US we are suppose to be a free people, free to make our own decisions. the government here is telling us what we can and cannot do with regard to festivals and other events. they are forcibly cancelling events in my town and all over the state and country.. events that are HUGE charity events like our stock show and rodeo. event that kids depend on for scholarship money. event that these kids have worked VERY hard ALL YEAR on their projects.
other events that local businesses NEED to survive such as sxsw. local businesses derive sometimes 30% or more of their YEARLY revenue. from this two week festival. not to mention the vendors, musicians, and others who depend on this showcase to get their music and products in the public eye.
in many cases the government has made the decision. not the venue, artist, participant, etc. we are suppose to be a FREE society able to make our own choices with regard to our health and safety. it should be up to us as a society to make the determination to shut things down. instead it was forced upon us. until this morning there had been absolutely ZERO cases of covid 19 in our area and only 70 something across the entire state of over 25 million people.
the fervor of this scare is being furthered by false media claims, political grandstanding and weaponization of the situation. legislation aimed at providing means to those affected and for mitigating further affects are being loaded with other crap that has nothing to do with the virus, virus containment, mitigation or recovery. in the name of politics in order to help those in need our leaders must also vote for unnecessary things included in these bills or be labelled as "uncaring" and declared by media as "against helping".

i will re-iterate that yes the virus is real and yes in some parts of the world it is a huge problem. in your country of Belize there have been zero cases reported. should your country demand everything shut down?

the US has had a total population of 329.6712 Million. as of yesterday at 4pm there were a total of 1,629 cases and only 47 deaths. that is .02% of the virus ending in death here. 33 of those deaths came from ONE nursing home.

by comparison our own center for disease control estimates that in 2020 the US will experience between 36-51 MILLION cases of influenza. of those 22-55 THOUSAND people will die. do you see where i can say the seriousness of the issue is overblown? a difference of 35,998,371 cases and a difference of 21,953 deaths.

bottom line. in a truly free society WE THE PEOPLE should be allowed to make our own determinations about how the virus will affect us and those around us. instead we are one small step from being controlled by martial law.

enjoy Belize. we hope to return this summer....if we are allowed to leave our home

Hi LD , you think thats bad, my wife's from Tx , we're in Florida , GEEZ Disney is closing and all sport and all charitable functions , the cruises are stopping , the world is going on lock down , the real problem is we dont know if this is the start middle or end , and most people arent capable of making clear rational decisions . and the WH is inclined to take knee jerk measures after making major mistakes. Me and my Carolyn are just taking sensible precautions , no panic buying , just sun bathing and swimming in the pool. Good luck to you

I'm hearing, in different social forums, and somewhat here too, people complaining about their "liberties", of making decisions over their bodies and their associations with others. Conventions and gathering still taking place . And people stockpiling not only TP, but guns and ammo too.

I have "boots on the ground" (close family) in Italy. I read news article (in Italian) from there. Venice, Padova and Treviso (my region, many relatives there, born there, my old stomping ground) are 3 of the original quarantined "red zones", days before the quarantine became nationwide.

I have couple of words for y'all: THIS STUFF IS REAL!

This somewhat long article should give you an idea about what it's like to be there now: https://www.thedailybeast.com/in-romes-coronavirus-lockdown-the-living-are-trapped-with-the-dead?ref=home

Please take it to heart. Don't go crazy and panic. But be prepared with REAL necessities (not stockpile stupid crap like TP), and be kind. Enforce social distancing, and even if our over-proactive Federal Administration or Texas Government doesn't enforce a public movement ban, do it anyway.
If not for yourself, for your elderly and weak, It could be one of your grandparents.

I wish this forum actually threaded replies to individual I think Vallew has got mixed up into the political fight between LD and Ditalian. It was LD who asked the thread be closed, I don't think the Insults were aimed at Vallew.
Earlier on in this thread I stated this is a very real virus, not some political construct. The real reason that Authorities worldwide are so very worried (yes in all countries and all political persausions) is that they are seeing a NEW virus,
No knowledge of long term outcome or how to treat it
They are seeing it has a rapid spread and can cause serious hospitalisation problems and a well above average (for other flu viruses) mortality rate.
Now a few months in it is being seen that many of the previously Hospitalised patients who have "recovered " Have severly damaged lungs that appear permanent and could have life long lung problems in the future. It is all NEW to the medical world. take all the sensible precautions already outlined be Health ministries world wide. The figures that were being argued over in this thread at the start of March bear little resemblance to the figures at this moment. Everyone can opine wether they think the earlier information given to the public was good or bad. Things could have been done better yes but in every country the population seems to be claiming their own Government could have done better. In
Belize At the moment the only country in the Americas virus free, The population are not happy that airplanes from virus affected US cities airports were still bringing in Tourists, Some of whom were told they had to self Quarantine for 14 days or return on the same planes return journey, but plenty were still allowed into the country.
