Things I Learned from. My First Visit

Hello to All:
My wife and I are retired, living in Michigan, and we’re both 76 years old. I had done some traveling when I was younger; but, my wife had never been out of CONUS. I’m a disabled Vet and I use a “Walker” and a Cane. My mobility is limited especially if a lot of walking is required. My wife gets around quite well;, consequently I rely on her for mobility assistance. We spent a week in Ambergris Caye and, in no particular order, here’s a list of some things we learned from our first visit:
1. The golf carts are much higher off the ground than those used in the states. It was a bit of a challenge to get in and out of the cart, especially for my wife.
2. We found our best daily routine was going out early in the morning, coming back to our condo around mid-day for lunch and a rest. Then going back out around late afternoon to do more exploring and have dinner. This routine limited our stair climbing to twice-a-day. (See Number 5.)
3. We always felt very safe even as late as 11 pm,
4. We found everyone to be extremely helpful. In fact, we were asked many times if we needed assistance,
5.. Unless you like to climb stairs, get a ground floor rental. There are no elevators. That was our biggest mistake. We rented a condo on the second floor.
6. The stairs are steep and very narrow with no hand railings.
7. Doorways in the rentals are narrow and will not accommodate wheelchairs, including the bathroom doors..
8. There are no grab bars or handholds in the bathrooms or showers in our rental or the several properties we visited.
Those are the major issues that come to mind. The younger folks will probably not find these observations very helpful. We found Belize to be very beautiful and we’re planning a return trip for early 2023. Pleasant travels, DonR.
