New Visa Renewal Rules

The Immigration website has not even been updated yet to reflect these changes, but the visa renewal process just became onerous: the authorities now want a bank statement, proof of source of income; proof of local residential address; and an outgoing air ticket. All of this for what is in effect an extension of a mere tourist visa. Gone are the days of just presenting a passport, saying you wanted an extension, and paying the fee of $100 US for a month. I wonder if people awaiting the outcome of their permanent residency applications have to go through this same rigmarole. Pretty off-putting, I have to say.
