Considering Ecuador

Hi - We currently live in Houston, TX, and are considering Ecuador. Retiring in a couple of years at 62 and 50 years of age.
Quality of life, nice weather, and low cost of living have attracted us to Ecuador, but beyond that, we are clueless.
We prefer being near the water, whether that is lakes and streams or the ocean. We love the convenience of city life (We live in downtown Houston now), but also want to be much closer to nature than we are today. I speak enough Spanish to get around, my Wife speaks none currently.
We would like to start traveling and planning within the next year or two. Would love to hear experiences or advice on the best place to start looking!

Good morning,
I would say I was a lot like you in the beginning. I lived in downtown Chicago so I knew I wanted to live on the ocean (I overlooked Lake Michigan which looks like an ocean). I came to Salinas in June of 2009. I looked up and down the coast for a month and decided that Salinas felt more like a little city. I bought a condo right on the ocean and 12 years later...here I am. I think the answer is to do an exploratory search. I was here a month looking before I found what I wanted. Here is the link to my company's website I started here when I came down. There are lots of housing choices there. www.ieiecuador.net. I am happy to answer any questions you may have...real estate related or not.

I too recommend an exploratory trip to all the regions you think you might want to settle in, and you'll certainly want to rent for a substantial period of time before you consider buying anything.

As for Kimberly Kagan, I can attest to her good character and great knowledge of the Salinas area. In August 2019, we called her up out of the blue and asked if she could answer some questions for us while we were visiting Salinas on our exploratory trip.

She was wonderfully generous with her time and shared her knowledge of the area with us, all without us ever looking for a rental or a house to buy. Yes, she is a real estate agent and has that knowledge too, But first and foremost is that she is a wonderful and caring person who genuinely loves Ecuador and especially Salinas, and will be willing to help you too, We will be getting there this year permanently, and we look forward to our friend Kim welcoming us to Salinas -- and helping us find a place to live, too.

There are some unscrupulous salespeople there (and on this thread), and a few eternal pessimists as well. Kim is neither. She will treat you very well and very fairly.
