Hi! New to this blog. I have researched a lot, read and listened to several expats who live in Ecuador. What I am seeking is info from those who live there now about everyday life pros and cons in your location. Why you chose your location? Was it your only location or did you move within Ecuador and why? What makes you happy about where you live and what you would change.
Thanks!

We tried the coast because we loved the idea of walking along the sea everyday and the sound of the waves and of course, eating seafood!
Cons, it is very hot on the coast a lot of the year. Towns with infrastructure are mobbed with people during tourist season. Seafood ALL the time, even breakfast. No bakeries. Sand in everything, clothes, shoes, room. Hot water for showers not typical due to climate. Effect of salt in seawater, seaspray, etc on car. Vegetation at coast is very different, more like jungle.
Ultimately, we decide to visit the coast but not live there full-time. For us it was not a great fit....

Did not like the huge city vibe of Quito nor the crime and congestion.
Tried valley of Tumbaco/Cumbaya just outside of Quito where the airport for Quito is located. Cumbaya is expensive due to expat community. That valley is where they grow a lot of roses, so climate is very warm compared to other mountain locations.
Due to climate (years in Houston and Oklahoma in summers, not wanting really hot), we tried Valkey de Los Chillos just outside of Quito. We love it here....just outside like suburbs of Sangolqui which has population of about 75,000. Sangolqui has a very indigenous but Ecuadorian yuppie vibe. We have everything close-by, shopping mall, local market fruits and vegetables, Megamaxi (like Target), nice medical clinics and hospital, lots of outdoor activities AND breakfast view of snow covered Cotopaxi.....
Climate is USA spring....light hoodie in morning, short sleeves in afternoon. Not too hot or cold. 360 view of mountains view since we live in a valley. Mountain food, more like meat and potatoes in USA. Fresh seafood in local market to buy and cook at basically the same prices we found on coast.

Thanks for info, soccergirl. What if one is a vegetarian/vegan where you are? Any thoughts on that? For instance I enjoy having lots of bean, potato & rice varieties, and also nice to have some vege restaurants (or at least a vege option or 2 on the menu) and an occasional plant-based meat substitute.

If you are in tourist area you will have some (not many) veggy options, maybe a vegan option). May even have a veg restaurant.
If is an ecuadorian area, then forget it. They will probably offer to knock you up something, but this may just mean they pick the pieces of meat out for you.

Hey user001 you can always ask them not to put meat on your plate. Ecuadorians don’t believe in veggies only plate but they will offer you only veggies if you ask them for. Don’t get mad at them for putting meat on your plate, it’s their tradition to eat meat. If you go to the big markets, they have all kids of cooked veggies just tell them I only want veggies and you’ll get your way but you won’t get a menu with a veggie option no way haha. Ecuadorians are very sensitive people when it comes to their food. Good luck finding a restaurant just for vegetarians.

Yes you can ask and depending on the location they will understand. Other places they won't. And in some cases, will give you a little piece of chicken, thinking you just cannot afford to pay for meat lol. And in many many places, they will cook the food with meat as normal and just pick it out for you - I've seen this many many times. This may be ok for some vegetarians and completely not for other vegetarians.
But things are definitely better now, than they were 20 years ago :thumbups: when I first got here
