we are moving to Samos in June 2010 and are taking our very large dog with us. Obviously we will have to drive to get him there, any tips will be greatly appreciated

I didn't quite understand what it is you are inquiring about. when we moved to Greece, our major problem was the dog. The only carrier we felt safe with was Lufthansa. they seemed to know what they were talking about, the other airlines were transferring our calls from one department to another - and when we would call back they'd have a different story each time. Anyway. It would be nice to get a flight without a layover but for Greece, there are 3 options New York, Atlanta and one more (i forget). Lufthansa for the layover they say they take the dogs out. and if the journey is too long, they will feed the dog with food you provide them. Hope this helps. if you need more info, don't hesitate. I didn't get any replies to my msgs on fora when it was my time, so If i can Id like to make your 'adventure' easier.

In years gone my parents and I drove from England to Greece regularly. France, Germany and Italy have wide motorways and lots of service stations. The ferries are numerous to Patras (Peloponnese) across from Italy's ferry ports. There is a wide motorway from Patras to Athens now. That is what I recall from the past and by recent driving on the Patras-Athens motorway. There are various maps and useful links on my personal website: http://www.anastasias-koroni-greece.co.uk

WheI returned from my studies from Warwick I drove through Calais down to the wine regions of France avoiding the motorway tolls. I managed to visit some exceptional wineries. Then I drove up the mountains to Chamonix and passed the Mont Blanc tunnel to Italy. In Italy I went down for a trip to Tuscani and enjoyed the scenery. I drove up northeast to Venice where I selected a ferry to Igoumenitsa and followed the egnatia motorway to Thessaloniki. If there is a ferry to Samos from Thessaloniki I would reccommend the Egnatia motorway for it is fast, safe, new and toll free. Have a nice trip and Welcome to Greece!! : )
