Hi there! We are an American couple seriously contemplating moving to Honduras for retirement. I have not been outside of America (except on a cruise). My husband lived in Germany for a few years with the military. Are there any tips or advise that can be offered for living in Honduras? Thank you in advance for anything you can offer.

Everyone's situation is different so it is difficult to provide tips without knowing more about your thoughts on where you are thinking of living - mainland Honduras or the island of Roatan. I'm a retired single man and just received my second year residency card (like US Green Card). I live on Roatan and would not consider the mainland except some new gated secure housing developments catering to Americans & Canadians between the cities of Trujillo & La Ceiba. There are 2 developments under construction I considered managed by a Toronto company called NJOI (enjoy - get it??). You can learn more about them at https://njoi.ca/
I love living on Roatan but you have to realize island living is very unique. The island is very safe & also caters to Americans & Canadians. There are quite a few restaurants / resorts owned by Americans / Canadians. Many retirees feel more comfortable just eating/drinking at those owned restaurants but I enjoy all restaurants and want to help the locals be successful entrepreneurs. You do not have to speak Spanish on island. Almost all large stores and nice restaurants have staff that are bi-lingual. Most Roatans are taught English in school. You run into Spanish only speaking people who migrated to Roatan from the mainland where they mainly speak only Spanish. (example taxi / bus drivers). But I have been doing my best to learn Spanish & locals appreciate when you try to speak with them in Spanish. And they are very nice & understanding if you bungle words in Spanish. Although I am a resident I suggest you try out the island by renting a short-term furnished apartment for about 3 months. You can typically learn about the various different parts of the island in 3 months. If you overstay 30 days as a visitor you can pay a small fine/tax for overstaying your visit. So buy a round trip ticket even if you never use the return portion or use it later for a trip back to the US. Customs will want to see the return ticket/date when you enter. If you find you like Roatan, then you can consider filling for residency. You must hire an attorney to file for residency & it can cost from $2500 - $3500 depending on the attorney you hire. If you know how to use Facebook which everyone uses on Roatan (you rarely find a dedicated website to any business). I suggest you join a FB group named ÄskAnythingRoatan if you were thinking Roatan. There are thousands of members and just about any question you can think of has probably already been answered. Use the search function to ask your questions. If you have more specific questions I'll be happy to help but I'm knowledgeable of Roatan so I won't be very helpful about the mainland. Mike

Hi, In my reply I stated you can stay for 30 days but I think it is actually 90 days without penalty from the US. Again you can find the exact answer on Facebook AskAnythingRoatan (one word) Mike
