Lake Chapala

I have just been reading an item on this sit about Ajijic. Like the author, I am not one for living in "gated communities" and had eyed a handful of properties which loooked interesting. The whole of the area is inviting and property prices more reasonable than down at the coast.
However, on doing my homework, I see that the water level on the lake is slowly falling as it is siphoned off for use in Mexico City and that you can now walk on certain areas which were under water not too long ago. The steady depletion of water stocks means that the pollution from farming and other activities has less bulk into which it can seep and dilute. Consequently pollution of the lake will not only continue but increase as the level falls. Or have I been reading the wrong boooks?
