Health Insurance

Hi Everyone,

I have so much appreciated all the information everyone on the board have provided on my previous posts. Thank you all.

I am leaving for Mexico (an extended visit - not moving yet) in 2 weeks and trying to get all the last minute items in place.

I remember being told I should get some kind of travel health insurance to cover health costs in Mexico. I am 72, so there is a fair chance I will need some medical care during my visit. Do any of you have any thoughts on this? Is is necessary? What companies have you used or do you recommend?

If you need emergency medical care in a hospital, or by a private physician, you will pay out of pocket. Should you have travel insurance, you will be responsible for applying for reimbursement.
If you are just making a brief visit, as a tourist, just take a deep breath and enjoy yourself. If you trip on a cobblestone, ask to be taken to Cruz Roja, the Mexican Red Cross. They will treat you and suggest an appropriate donation.
Enjoy!

For a short trip, in the past I've just gotten the travel insurance offered with the flight, or through AAA if I booked my trip with them. I disagree with RV Gringo because, almost 2 years ago, I did trip over an obstacle on a sidewalk and fractured a wrist and damaged a bicep. Both were treated by an incompetent surgeon who greatly exacerbated both problems, all at my expense (because I had been out of the US too long to have travel insurance and was about to embark on getting residency, then sign up for health insurance). The subsequent wrist reconstruction, and the later complete shoulder replacement were, fortunately, covered by Medicare, but not the airfares back and forth, and food and accommodation before and after the surgeries until I was well enough to return home to Mexico, weeks later. Always have some type of medical insurance. FWIW, if I had had insurance I would have chosen a better hospital and gotten the correct treatment right away.
