My wife and I are considering moving abroad (she's pushing more than I am), but I would like to find a place with great food and good music. I am a big fan of the Gastro pub scene (hence the name), BBQ, authentic ethnic foods of all kinds, etc. Anyone have thoughts on places in Mexico to consider? I'm not interested in a big city, so Mexico City is probably out. Any beach towns (or close to the beach) that would fit the mold? By music I mean rock bands, Mexican music, blues, jazz, etc. Whatever as long as we could see shows regularly in clubs in a safe location. We both work remotely.

I know you mention you don't want a big city, but that is where you can easily find the combination of live music frequently and great food that you seek. Mexico City has some nice areas with plenty of all, and you don't necessarily have to experience the "big city" - (Roma, Condesa, Coyoacan - all cool areas, good food, good art, good music). Puebla is also a city with great food and music. Oaxaca is smaller, great food scene, but not sure about live music - my only experience there with music was on holidays. Good luck, hope this helps a little.

Yes this helps a lot! Thank you.
The allure for us to go to Mexico is that we would also learn Spanish, which we have talked about for years. I'll probably have more questions as I explore your suggestions. I assumed there are probably places in or around Mexico City that aren't as crowded as the overall population number would lead one to believe.
Thanks again!

Puerto Vallarta is wonderful and if you want the big city Guadalajara is only a 4-Hour drive. Do some research on that I think you would really enjoy it I've been going there for 30 years.

In general Mexico has great food and music. It is their culture. First determine things like weather, altitude (mtns vs beach vs lowlands), proximity to USA (huge for me) and culture events that are important to you. I say use those things to help determine location also. FYI learning Spanish was much easier in my younger years. Begin that sooner than later.

You may want to take a look at Querétaro. It isn't what I'd call a "big city" but it is big enough that it has a decent amount of the things you mention that you enjoy, like good food and music. We lived there for 3 years and I would move back in a millisecond because I like those same things too! We are now in Mexico City which is indeed huge and, although it has great options for food and music, we aren't near them geographically and with the traffic the way it is those things might as well be in another city.
