Driving From The US

Is it practical and safe to drive from California to Guadalajara? Or should we sell our car and purchase an automobile once we’ve arrived to live there? How long can you drive on a US license if you live in Mexico and is it difficult to get a Mexican Driver liscense? If you live in a smaller area like Ajijic is it feasible to use public transport instead of a car or is it walkable to most necessities?
