Hello everyone. I have recently been married in Norway and applying for family reunification with my spouse. I have all my paperwork. Researched online, but came up with questions along the way and I would like to know more about the process so I can be better prepared for this experience.
When I hand in my application here in Norway, the UDI website says it usually will take 6 months to process my application for family reunification. I find that concerning. However, the police and tax office are said that it should only take 2 weeks. If it so happens that it will take months, I was wondering if the officials will let me stay throughout the process since I am just here on a 90 day tourist visa.
I was also told on the phone with the UDI people that there is a possibility that my passport will be taken. I also read on the internet that sometimes the process drags on and there is a possibility that I will have to be away from my spouse for long periods of time.
Has anyone gone through this experience being married to a Norwegian citizen and applying for family reunification? If so, please enlighten me on the process and what to expect.

I'm sorry. If you don't tell us what nationality you are, how can we know your rights in Norway? If you have permission to stay in Norway for 90 days, if you are in Norway on day 91 you will be in Norway illegally unless you have written permission that is not the case. It's quite simple. If Norway takes your passport, you cannot leave the country. Do everything in writing.

As Jonty said, we must know what country you have come here from. If from the US then I will be able to help you. And again this info is purely for US citizens ONLY! If all paperwork is in order and application is accurate when handed in, you will remain in Norway legally for the entire process regardless of visa. But if anything was needed by them and not included, there could be problems. Yes you must include your passport, therefore you cannot leave the country for any reason what so ever, (including any shopping trips to Sweden). If you leave the application will be void and you could risk not being allowed back in Norway. Are you already legally married btw? Or is this an engagement visa you are applying for?

Sorry for the late reply. I should have mentioned that I am a US citizen.

@Tazzbaby I am also in the same boat. In my state (Missouri) my fiancé and I are legally able to get married even if he is from a different country. We had planned to do family reunification visa from inside Norway (his country) after the wedding. Not too worried myself about them holding on to my visa as much as I'm worried about trying to get my transfer from the company I work for without it. As well, are we able to work with a reunification visa? My fiancé is on long term disability and trying to go back to school. I am trying to save up enough to not be a burden on anyone when I get there. I missed the cut off in 2015 where I could have done the fiancé visa in his country. :( This is the only other way I'm thinking I can make our dreams a reality.
