Hello, I am in need of some urgent advice. I moved to Norway 2 years ago with my daughter and my partner who is Norwegian. I was hit with a very high tax bill due to me not being here all the time (I left for 6 months for work). Since my return everything has gone wrong. My partner left the family home due to legal reasons. I have been left with rent that I cannot pay and am increasingly in debt for this, I am threatened with eviction. I am a sub-contractor and work has completely dried up, last month I only earnt 1750nok all month. My tax bill for last year was a lot higher than I expected and I was left with a deficit which I could not pay, I was taken to court and told to pay it off monthly, but now my next tax bill is due and I do not have the money to pay that either. Due to the legal issues my partner had, child services are hanging around. My teenage daughter is depressed and is skipping school, with the other issues child services are not going to be happy with this. I regularly am having to go all day not eating in order to feed my daughter. Due to all the problems I am having I have failed to deliver on some contracts and now I am on a final warning to lose my contract. I have been denied any help from Nav. I do not have a personal number and I have been refused one on numerous occasions. I really do not know what to do, I cannot go back to my country of origin for various reasons, and even if I could I cannot afford the plane fare and I am tied into my accomodation. I am here alone apart from my daughter, I have no support network and no family to help. What are my options?

Dear Lwb,
So sorry you're having such a rough time. Which country are you from? Are you a member of a church?

Hello Lwb,
So sorry you're having a terrible time. I see it's been some days since your post. It s important you eat, get some cheap staples. Is there a church you can join for support? Or someone you can open up to that you know? Which country are you from? What is the obstacle to return aside from fare? (Do you have more network there?) Norway is a very difficult country to live in, I've been here for 8 years and counting the days until we go.

1. Don't panic 2. Tell us where your from
Are you an EU citizen? Do you come from a country that has a bilateral treaty with Norway covering tax, health and social security. I know of cases where foreigners have been taxed as non residents by one part of Skatteetaten because they were refused inclusion on the Folkregister whilst also being taxed a residents because they lived in Norway "for tax purposes" .... all illegal ..... it is common for EU citizens, members of the Norwegian national insurance scheme to be denied benefits. For more details, search the internet for "Migrant workers""Norway""EFTA Surveillance Authority", read what you find. Report back here if it appears Norway has not altered its behaviour since the judgements against it and we'll take it from there.

Any updates? So you were tax liable to Norway but were you allowed to be registered as living in Norway? If you were denied benefits because you only "lived in Norway for tax purposes", you're not alone and should contact the EFTA Surveillance Unit who are used to these cases and close to infringement proceeding vs Norway because of this behaviour.
