Cost of Living

I would like to get information on best places to live near other expats and possibly would like to find out cost of daily living expenses. What is the best area to find suitable short furnished lets (6mths) and what is the average cost of living in the area. I have been charged with finding out how much I would spend each month compared to living here in the USA.
I understand it is way more expensive, but all in all, day to day living costs need to be examined. I would not be living like a tourist, but living basic on the economy.
