What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Virgin Gorda?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Virgin Gorda about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Virgin Gorda. The island has a small clinic, but for more comprehensive care, you may need to travel to the larger island of Tortola. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care and childbirth. Check if your policy covers medical evacuation, in case you need to be transferred to a hospital off the island for the birth or any complications. Find a local doctor or midwife who you trust and feel comfortable with. They can guide you through the process and provide valuable advice on having a baby in Virgin Gorda. Consider hiring a doula or birth coach who can provide emotional support and help you navigate the healthcare system. Prepare for the possibility that certain resources may not be readily available on the island. You may need to bring in certain items from off the island, such as specific brands of baby formula or diapers. Take advantage of the local community. Other expat parents can be a great source of support and advice. They can share their experiences and provide recommendations for local services. Learn about the local customs and traditions related to childbirth and parenting. This can help you integrate into the community and respect the local culture. Finally, remember to take care of your mental health. Having a baby in a foreign country can be stressful, so it's important to find ways to relax and enjoy this special time," said a member in Virgin Gorda, the British Virgin Islands.
