What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Ostrava?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Ostrava about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in the Czech Republic. The country has a high standard of healthcare, and maternity and postnatal care are generally very good. You should register with a local doctor or gynaecologist as soon as you know you're pregnant. They will guide you through the process and arrange all necessary tests and scans. If you don't speak Czech, it's advisable to find a doctor who speaks your language. Although many doctors in the Czech Republic speak English, communication can be crucial during pregnancy and childbirth. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help bridge any language or cultural gaps. Research and visit local hospitals to find out where you would like to give birth. Some hospitals in Ostrava may have more modern facilities or more experience with expat patients. Ensure that your health insurance covers maternity care and childbirth in the Czech Republic. If you're employed in the country, you should be covered by the public health insurance system. Prepare all necessary documents for your baby's birth certificate and passport well in advance. As an expat, there may be additional paperwork to complete. Finally, connect with other expat parents in Ostrava. They can provide valuable advice and support, and may be able to recommend doctors, hospitals, and other resources," remarked another expat in Ostrava, Czechia.
