What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Machala?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Machala about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Ecuador. Public healthcare is available, but many expats opt for private healthcare due to its higher standard of care. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some insurance companies may have a waiting period for maternity coverage, so plan ahead. Find a reputable obstetrician and hospital for your prenatal care and delivery. Ask for recommendations from other expats or locals you trust. Learn some basic Spanish medical terms or consider hiring a translator for your doctor's appointments if you're not fluent in Spanish. Communication is key when it comes to healthcare. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Understand the cultural norms and practices around childbirth in Ecuador. For example, it's common for women to give birth via C-section in private hospitals. Ensure your newborn's paperwork for citizenship and passports is in order. If one parent is from a different country, check the regulations for claiming citizenship for your child. Lastly, connect with other expat parents in Machala. They can provide invaluable advice, support, and friendship during this exciting time in your life," wrote a member who made the move to Machala, Ecuador.
