What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Pacific Harbour?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Pacific Harbour about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Fiji. While the country has a number of public and private hospitals, the standard of care may not be the same as in your home country. Therefore, it's advisable to have a comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care and childbirth. Secondly, consider hiring a local doula or midwife who can guide you through the process and provide support during labor and delivery. They can also help you navigate the local healthcare system and communicate with medical staff. Thirdly, ensure you have all the necessary documents for your baby, such as a birth certificate and passport. It's also important to understand the process of registering your baby's birth in Fiji and in your home country. Fourthly, consider the language barrier. If you don't speak the local language, it might be helpful to learn some basic phrases or have a translator available during medical appointments. Fifthly, be aware of the local customs and traditions related to childbirth. In Fiji, it's common for the extended family to be involved in the pregnancy and birth process. Lastly, make sure you have a support network. Living abroad can be isolating, especially when you're going through a major life event like having a baby. Reach out to other expats, join local parenting groups, or connect with family and friends back home for emotional support," said another expat in Pacific Harbour, Fiji.
