What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Bordeaux?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Bordeaux about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the French healthcare system, which is one of the best in the world. Pregnant women in France are well cared for, with regular check-ups and ultrasounds as standard. Ensure you have the right health insurance. If you're working in France, you'll be covered by the French social security system, which covers most of the costs related to pregnancy and childbirth. If not, make sure your private insurance covers these costs. Find a good obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language, as this will make the process much easier. Many doctors in France speak English, but it's not a guarantee. Consider taking prenatal classes. These are a great way to meet other expectant parents, learn about the birthing process in France, and get answers to any questions you may have. Decide where you want to give birth. In France, you can choose to give birth in a public hospital, a private clinic, or at home. Each option has its pros and cons, so research each one and decide what's best for you. Prepare for maternity leave. France has very generous maternity leave policies, so make sure you understand your rights and how to claim your benefits. Finally, embrace the French way of parenting. France has a unique approach to raising children, which includes a focus on independence, structured routines, and balanced diets. Reading up on this can help you navigate the world of French parenting," said a member in Bordeaux, France.
