What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Ioannina?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Ioannina about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Greek healthcare system. Greece has a mix of public and private healthcare, and as an expat, you may be eligible for state healthcare if you are a resident and make social security contributions. Secondly, you should find a good obstetrician. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or locals, or search online. Make sure the doctor speaks a language you're comfortable with, as communication is crucial during this period. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help you navigate the Greek healthcare system. Fourthly, learn about the maternity rights in Greece. If you're working, you may be entitled to maternity leave. It's also worth noting that fathers are entitled to paternity leave in Greece. Fifthly, start looking for pediatricians before the baby arrives. Similar to finding an obstetrician, you can ask for recommendations or search online. Sixthly, if you're planning to give birth in a hospital, visit a few beforehand to see which one you prefer. Some hospitals in Ioannina may offer tours for expecting parents. Lastly, connect with other expat parents in Ioannina. They can provide valuable advice and support, and may be able to recommend baby-related services such as childcare or baby stores. There are several online forums and social media groups where you can connect with other expat parents," explained one expat living in Ioannina, Greece.
