What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Kanazawa?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Kanazawa about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Japan. Prenatal care is highly valued and regular check-ups are expected. You may need to find an English-speaking doctor or midwife if you're not fluent in Japanese. Secondly, consider joining local expat groups or online forums. They can provide valuable advice and support, as well as help you navigate cultural differences and expectations around childbirth in Japan. Thirdly, understand that the Japanese healthcare system may have different practices and attitudes towards childbirth than what you're used to. For example, pain relief during labor is less common and fathers are often not allowed in the delivery room. Fourthly, make sure you understand the costs involved. While healthcare in Japan is generally affordable, it's important to check what is covered by insurance and what you'll need to pay out of pocket. Fifthly, plan for postnatal care. In Japan, it's common for new mothers to spend a few weeks in a postnatal care center where they can rest and learn about baby care. Lastly, remember to register your baby's birth with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure they have citizenship. Also, be aware that Japan has strict rules about names, so you may need to choose a name that fits within these rules," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Kanazawa, Japan.
