What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Atami?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Atami about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese healthcare system. Japan has a universal healthcare system, so you will need to register for health insurance. This will cover a significant portion of your medical costs, including prenatal care and childbirth. Secondly, you should find a hospital or clinic that you are comfortable with. Some hospitals in Japan may not have English-speaking staff, so you may want to find one that does or consider hiring a translator. Thirdly, understand the cultural differences. In Japan, it's common for mothers to stay in the hospital for a few days after giving birth, which is different from many Western countries. Fourthly, consider taking Japanese prenatal classes. These classes can help you understand what to expect during childbirth in Japan and can also be a great way to meet other expectant mothers. Fifthly, make sure you understand the paperwork. There will be various forms to fill out before and after the birth of your child. It's important to understand these documents, so consider asking a Japanese-speaking friend or hiring a translator to help. Lastly, embrace the local customs and traditions. Having a baby in a different country can be a wonderful opportunity to learn about and embrace new customs and traditions. This can make the experience even more special and memorable," remarked another expat who made the move to Atami, Japan.
