What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Ajijic?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Ajijic about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Mexico. Public healthcare is available, but many expats opt for private healthcare due to its higher standard of care and shorter waiting times. Secondly, ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some insurance policies may not cover pregnancy-related costs, so it's crucial to check this in advance. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help you navigate the local healthcare system. Fourthly, learn some basic Spanish medical terms or consider hiring a translator for your doctor's appointments. While some doctors may speak English, not all medical staff will be fluent. Fifthly, research and visit several hospitals or birthing centers before making a decision. Look for facilities that align with your birth plan and comfort level. Sixthly, connect with other expat parents in Ajijic. They can provide valuable advice and support, and may be able to recommend doctors or hospitals. Lastly, ensure you understand the process for registering your baby's birth and obtaining a passport if you plan to travel outside of Mexico. This can be a complex process, so it's best to start researching early," wrote a member who made the move to Ajijic, Mexico.
