What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Katwijk?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Katwijk about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"1. Research and understand the Dutch healthcare system: The Netherlands has a high standard of healthcare and it is important to familiarize yourself with the system, especially maternity care. 2. Choose a healthcare provider: You can choose between a hospital birth or a home birth, both are common in the Netherlands. Midwives are usually the primary care providers for pregnancies and births, but if there are complications, a gynecologist will take over. 3. Register your pregnancy: As soon as you know you're pregnant, register with a midwife practice. They will guide you through the process and arrange all necessary check-ups and tests. 4. Attend prenatal classes: These classes are a great way to prepare for childbirth and parenthood. They also provide an opportunity to meet other expectant parents in Katwijk. 5. Learn the language: While many Dutch people speak English, it can be helpful to learn some Dutch, especially medical terms related to pregnancy and childbirth. 6. Understand your rights and benefits: The Netherlands has generous maternity and paternity leave policies. Make sure you understand your rights and what you're entitled to. 7. Get a kraamzorg: A kraamzorg is a maternity nurse who comes to your home after the baby is born to help with care and provide advice. This service is unique to the Netherlands and is covered by Dutch health insurance. 8. Register the birth: You must register the birth of your baby at the local municipality (gemeente) in Katwijk within three days of the birth. 9. Get health insurance for your baby: In the Netherlands, it is mandatory to have health insurance. You need to add your baby to your policy within four months after birth. 10. Join local parent groups: This can be a great way to meet other expat parents, share experiences, and get advice. 11. Enjoy the experience: Having a baby in a different country can be a unique and rewarding experience. Enjoy the journey and the unique aspects of Dutch culture," remarked another expat in Katwijk, The Netherlands.
