What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Dammam?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Dammam about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Saudi Arabia. The country has both public and private healthcare, with expats often opting for private due to shorter waiting times and English-speaking staff. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some insurance policies may require a waiting period before maternity coverage is provided, so plan accordingly. Find a good obstetrician and hospital that you are comfortable with. Many expats in Dammam recommend the Saudi German Hospital or the Dammam Medical Complex. Understand the cultural norms and laws in Saudi Arabia. For instance, unmarried women giving birth may face legal issues. Also, women often need to be accompanied by a male guardian for medical appointments, although this is changing in some places. Prepare for the birth certificate process. The hospital will provide a notification of birth, which you will need to take to the local civil affairs office to obtain an official birth certificate. Remember that the official language in Saudi Arabia is Arabic. While many doctors and nurses speak English, not all hospital staff may be fluent. It may be helpful to learn some basic Arabic phrases or have a translator. Breastfeeding in public is generally accepted in Saudi Arabia, but it's important to be discreet and respectful of cultural norms. Lastly, connect with other expats who have had babies in Dammam. They can provide valuable advice and support during this exciting time," wrote a member who made the move to Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
