What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Esteli?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Esteli if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Esteli, it's important to avoid discussing politics or criticizing the government, as this can be seen as disrespectful and can lead to uncomfortable situations. Avoid wearing revealing clothing, especially in religious or traditional settings, as Nicaraguans tend to dress modestly. It's considered rude to point with your fingers, especially at people. Instead, use your whole hand or nod in the direction you're indicating. Do not refuse food or drink offered to you, as it can be seen as a rejection of hospitality. Avoid being overly loud or boisterous in public places, as Nicaraguans value respect and politeness. Do not litter or disrespect the environment, as this is frowned upon. Avoid making assumptions or stereotypes about Nicaraguans or their culture, as this can be seen as disrespectful. It's also important to respect local customs and traditions, even if they're different from your own. Finally, always ask for permission before taking photos of people, as it's considered impolite to do so without consent," commented one expat who made the move to Esteli, Nicaragua.
