What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Salmiya?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Salmiya if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"I teach English and in a conversation class I asked a married student how he met his wife. There was a great deal of confusion among the class and then someone explained that he, like everyone else, married his first cousin. I had no idea," said another expat in Salmiya, Kuwait.

"It is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions when visiting Salmiya. It is important to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. It is also important to avoid public displays of affection, as this is considered inappropriate in Kuwaiti culture. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local laws and regulations, and to avoid engaging in activities that are illegal in Kuwait. Finally, it is important to be respectful of local religious beliefs and to avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics or religion," wrote a member who made the move to Salmiya, Kuwait.
