What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Izmir. They wrote...
"I like Turkish culture, but I guess the challenging aspect would be dealing with people who are completely opposite me in personality at the workplace. And that's not really a culture issue. I could experience that back in the US. Another thing would be not being able to express myself completely since I'm not fluent in Turkish," remarked another expat in Izmir, Turkey.
"Expats in Izmir often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Additionally, the cultural norms and expectations can be difficult to navigate, as they are often quite different from those of other countries. Additionally, the Turkish bureaucracy can be difficult to understand and navigate, making it difficult for expats to access services and resources. Finally, the local cuisine can be an acquired taste, and it can be difficult for expats to find familiar foods," said a member in Izmir, Turkey.
