Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city and the Aegean's most cosmopolitan port, often mistaken for Istanbul but distinctly its own place—sunnier, more relaxed, with a different historical rhythm. While Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia, Izmir faces west toward Greece across the water, shaped by centuries as a Mediterranean trading hub. The city wraps around a deep natural bay, with neighborhoods climbing hillsides and spreading inland, mixing Ottoman quarters with Belle Époque mansions and modern high-rises. The waterfront promenade, called the Alsancak, pulses with cafes, fish restaurants, and bars where locals spend evenings. Izmir's character comes from its openness: it's secular and outward-looking compared to much of Turkey, with a strong arts scene, university culture, and a reputation for tolerance. The old bazaar district still functions as a working market, not a tourist stage. Beyond the city proper, the surrounding region offers Aegean beaches, ancient ruins at Ephesus and Pergamon within day-trip distance, and wine country in the hinterland. Summers are hot and dry; winters mild. The city feels less monumental than Istanbul but more livable—less about conquering history and more about living well by the sea.
