What do expats find most challenging?

Answer this Question

We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Jost Van Dyke. They wrote...

"Expats in Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands, often find the laid-back, slow-paced lifestyle challenging to adapt to, especially if they are used to a fast-paced, high-stress environment. The island operates on "island time," which can be frustrating for those who are used to strict schedules and punctuality. Another challenge is the limited availability of goods and services. The island is small and remote, which means that many items need to be imported and can be expensive. This also means that there are fewer options for shopping, dining, and entertainment compared to larger cities. Language can also be a challenge for some expats. While English is the official language, the local dialect can be difficult to understand at first. The isolation of the island can also be challenging. While the natural beauty and tranquility of the island can be appealing, it can also feel isolating, especially for those who are used to living in bustling cities. Lastly, the cost of living can be high in Jost Van Dyke. The cost of housing, food, and other necessities is often higher than in other parts of the world due to the island's remote location and the need to import many goods," said another expat in Jost Van Dyke, the British Virgin Islands.
