What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Lille. They wrote...
"Expats in Lille, may find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as not everyone speaks English, and it is essential to learn French to fully integrate into the society. Additionally, they might struggle with the slower pace of life, as the French value a work-life balance and may not be as fast-paced as some expats are used to. The French bureaucracy can also be a challenge, as it can be time-consuming and complicated to navigate. Furthermore, adapting to the local customs and etiquette, such as the importance of greetings and the French dining culture, can be difficult for some expats. Lastly, building a social circle and making friends with the locals may take time, as the French can be initially reserved and may take a while to warm up to newcomers," explained one expat living in Lille, France.
