What do I need to know before retiring in Santa Ana?
When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Santa Ana, they said...
"Before retiring in Santa Ana, expats should know that the cost of living is relatively low compared to many Western countries, but higher than other parts of Costa Rica. The official language is Spanish, so learning the language or at least basic phrases can be beneficial. The healthcare system in Costa Rica is highly rated and affordable, with both public and private options available. Santa Ana has a warm tropical climate, with a rainy season from May to November. It's important to be prepared for this weather pattern. The city is known for its safety and tranquility, but like anywhere, it's still important to take standard safety precautions. Expats should also be aware that while Santa Ana is a small town, it is close to the capital city of San Jose, providing access to more urban amenities. The town itself has a mix of traditional Costa Rican culture and modern conveniences, with a variety of restaurants, shops, and entertainment options. Understanding the local customs and etiquette is also important. Costa Ricans, or "Ticos," are generally friendly and polite, with a laid-back attitude. Finally, it's crucial to understand the immigration and residency requirements in Costa Rica. There are several types of residency options available, each with its own requirements and benefits. It's recommended to consult with a legal expert to navigate this process," wrote a member who made the move to Santa Ana, Costa Rica.
