What do I need to know before moving to Carriacou Island?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Carriacou Island, they said...

"Carriacou Island is a small island with a population of around 8,000 people, known for its friendly locals, beautiful beaches, and vibrant culture. English is the official language, but many locals also speak a Creole dialect. The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, but US dollars are also widely accepted. The cost of living on Carriacou Island is relatively low compared to many other Caribbean islands, but it's important to budget for imported goods which can be more expensive. Healthcare facilities on the island are basic, so it's recommended to have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation. The island has a tropical climate with a wet and dry season. It's important to prepare for hurricane season, which typically runs from June to November. The island is generally safe, but like anywhere, it's important to take basic safety precautions. Public transportation is limited, so many expats choose to rent or buy a car. Driving is on the left side of the road. The island's infrastructure is not as developed as in larger countries, so power and water outages can occur. The island has a relaxed, laid-back lifestyle. Locals are known for their hospitality and community events are a big part of life on the island. The cuisine is a mix of African, Indian, and European influences, with seafood being a staple. Internet and mobile coverage can be spotty in some areas, so it's important to check this if you're planning to work remotely. Lastly, it's important to respect local customs and traditions, and make an effort to integrate into the local community," remarked another expat in Carriacou Island, Grenada.
