Chile welcomes Clinton's appointment as UN special envoy for Haiti

SANTIAGO, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The Chilean Foreign Ministry on Tuesday hailed the appointment of former U.S. president Bill Clinton as UN special envoy for Haiti.
According to a statement published by the ministry, the appointment made by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon will help to redeploy the international agenda on the issues of economic and social development in Haiti.
"The Chilean Foreign Ministry, loyal to the compromise of our country with the security and welfare of the Haitian people, expresses its disposition to collaborate with the new special envoy," the statement said.
Since 2005, Chile, together with other eight Latin American countries, has kept a military contingent of some 500 soldiers in Haiti, as part of the UN stabilization mission in the country.
In October 2008, the UN Security Council's 1840 resolution extended the mandate of the mission in Haiti for one more year till Oct. 15, 2009.
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has ordered to extend the mandate of the Chilean contingent for one year more after it expires in June.
