retired CAN F wants to move to AUS - where to start?

I would like to just take a plane to an AUS/NZ destination, preferably not a big city with a CAN expat community. I would like to keep my CAN citizenship so would perhaps just come in for 6 months or so on a tourist visa. I seek info from those who have made the jump as a retiree and learn from their experiences. Advise welcome.
