Studying Mandarin in Beijing

Hi,

My name is Ingrid Halim and I have a fond interest in learning how to speak Mandarin. People say that the best way is to go to China and learn first-hand. I am planning to go to Beijing for several months. Any traps that I have to watch out for? What is the average weekly expenses? Ease of transport? Would I be able to survive by speaking only English during the initial stages of my visit? Would be appreciated if someone could reply soonest. Thank you in advance for your help. Cheers!!!!
