Smart phones - contract or no contract?

My contract here in the States is up at the end of the month and I want to get a smart phone (android or iphone) but I'm moving to China in 6 months and therefore don't want to sign up for a two year contract.

If I were to buy a smart phone here, and pay for for it on a monthly basis, would I be able to bring it with me to China and get data on the 3G network over there? I assume this depends of what type of phones the Chinese network will accept. Also, maybe the Chinese carriers like China Mobile etc. only let you get data if you buy a phone and a contract through them?

Does anyone know how smart phones, getting data via contract, getting data without a contract, what type of smart phone will work in both the US and China, etc?

Any advice very much appreciated!
