Chinese Visa and Tax obligations

I am a US citizen who will be taking a temporary, but long-term assignment in China for at least 12 months.

If I maintain a standard, multiple entry, 90 day maximum duration of stay pass-port, am I able to rent an apartment in china on this Visa? Additionally, if I do rent an apartment (temporary resident on a business visa), however my salary is provided by an American company, through an American Bank account, do I have any tax obligations to China?
