New to Ecuador

I am considering a 1 week vacation to Ecuador in May. Never been there. Have visited Costa Rica 3 times recently. Like it very much, however have been hearing a lot about Ecuador and what I hear intrigues me very much (except what I am hearing of this new personal property tax). I have many questions. I like the highlands. Not a beach person. Military retiree.

Considering Cuenca, Otavalo and Cotacachi. Is it prudent to rent a car there? Traveling alone. Consider myself to be a savy traveler, safe, etc. Have always rented cars in Costa Rica and have driven their roads at night with no problem because I like to drive.

Any tips? Is my itinerary doable in 6 days?
