Moving to Machala?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning on moving to Ecuador for 10 months (on a Fulbright) in September. I'd like to live near the banana plantations on the coast.....was thinking ideally Machala or Pasaje (I'll be interviewing banana farm workers...hopefully!)

I would *love* to live with a family for 10 months, but I'm wondering if that sort of living situation is possible to find before going there? Any ideas?

Also, any tips in general on a single woman moving to Ecuador? I've heard mixed things about crime, etc. Also, if anyone has information on Machala or living in Machala, let me know!
