Bars on the Windows ~ Another Reason...

Many folks who come to Ecuador ask "why do so many homes have iron or metal bars on the windows?" And the usual responses are that it is a cultural thing, or to prevent crime and things along those lines.

I had a very reasonable and astute response provided to me the other day by my friends here the other day and wanted to share it, follow along with me...

When you come too Ecuador you will notice certain things in every village pueblo from coast to mountains to amazon: folks love to play soccer. Every place that has a flat surface will at some point in thday have a game -- the beach, the school yard, the hilltop around a church, and any street without too much traffic to interrupt a game.

Another point you will notice is that folks are pretty much, well, poor. So if a window is busted,, it may stay broken or not be replaced for awhile.

And there you go, another reason for the bars on the windows! So balls don't hit the windows and break very expensive glass panes.

...and that's the news from Puerto Anconcito and this edition of "why is it" in Ecuador!
