Cycling Quito -> Ocean

Calling all cycle tourists! What's the recommended route to cycle from Quito down to the ocean?

I'm on my "exploratory" trip in Ecuador to see if I want to move here. I recently arrived in Quito, but the ocean and warmer-weather are calling me! Soon I'd like to hop-on my touring bike and pedal down the mountains to the ocean. What better way to get to know la tierra del pais?

The most obvious route to take is E20. It does look very windy, narrow, and full of trucks on Google Street View. But is there really any better alternative? I read that many paved highways here in Ecuador have smaller dirt roads that run next to them, but I'm not seeing that on Google Maps..

Also, I'd love to meet fellow cyclo-tourists/bikepackers in the expat community while I'm here :)
